programs
The US Department of Agriculture
(USDA) offers various housing
assistance programs, two of which are
described below. Their Fresno office

504 Rehabilitation Loan Program:
provides up to $25,000 in loans
for very low income home owners. These
1% interest loans are paid over 20
years. Home-owners 62 years and older
may receive this money as a grant
rather than a loan. For more

Joe Serna, Jr. Farmworker Housing
Grant Program:
provides grants and loans to assist in
the development or rehabilitation of
various types of housing projects for
agricultural worker households.
This includes homeowner grants for
rehabilitation or new home
construction, rental construction
grants or loans and rental
rehabilitation grants or loans. The
grant can help fund a wide range of
activities including land acquisition,
site development; construction,
rehabilitation, design services,
operating and replacement services,
repayment of predevelopment loans,
provision of access for the elderly or
disabled, relocation, homeowner
counseling and other reasonable and
necessary costs. For more information

Salvation Army
The Salvation Army, located at 2040 East
Front Street in Selma, offers various
social services in the City of Selma,
including provision of temporary
emergency shelter. The City of Selma was
awarded a $3,500 grant by Union Bank in
October 2006 that provides up to $290
per month to the Salvation Army to
provide temporary emergency shelter to
homeless persons in Selma. For more
