SELMA ARTS CENTER RECEIVES NATIONAL DESIGN AWARD OF HONOR

FROM SOCIETY OF AMERICAN REGISTERED ARCHITECTS

The Selma Arts Center has been honored with a prestigious national design award from the Society of American Registered Architects.  Arthur Dyson of DSJ Architects and Selma City Manager Kenneth Grey accepted the award at a recognition dinner on October 17, 2014 in Palm Springs, CA.

The building, designed by Dyson was one of approximately 40 projects that were honored from throughout the world at the event.  Dyson had two projects honored during the awards dinner.  “I enjoyed working with the Community of Selma very much.  The vision of the community to construct an arts center should be commended.  I am honored for the award, but the value of the building is not the design, but when entering through the doors and experiencing the value of art and what it provides” said Dyson.

The Selma Arts Center opened in August of 2013 with the first performance, The Sound of Music.  Since that time the center has hosted a variety of shows, performances, concerts, events, meetings, as well as other types of functions.  The Selma Arts Center is located at 1935 High Street in downtown Selma.  The building has a very unique style and design and has created a positive boost to downtown Selma.  The theatre has state of the art sound and lighting equipment and seats 244 people.

Selma City Manager, Kenneth Grey who has been a supporter of the Arts for many years, was a major part of the construction of the Arts Center.  Grey and wife Marla were honored by the Fresno Arts Council in 2013 for their efforts on the project.  “This is the only structure in the City of Selma and the greater surrounding area that has received national recognition for design excellence. The Arts Center is representative of the commitment that Selma has made to revitalize its downtown district and to invigorate investment and growth in our community,” said Grey.
