Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS)
Serve Your Community. Support Public Safety.Apply Now: Selma Police Department VIPS
Since 1996, the Selma Police Department's Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS) Program has provided community members with an opportunity to support public safety through volunteer service and community engagement.
VIPS members assist the department with non-enforcement duties that help officers focus on their primary public safety responsibilities. Volunteers serve as additional eyes and ears in the community while supporting department operations, special events, and outreach activities. Volunteers do not carry weapons, make arrests, or take enforcement action.
What Do VIPS Do?
VIPS support the department in a variety of ways, including:
• Assisting at community events and public outreach activities
• Supporting traffic and pedestrian safety at special events
• Providing a visible presence at department-approved assignments
• Observing and reporting suspicious activity to police personnel
• Supporting crime prevention and community engagement efforts
Volunteers receive department training that may include radio communications, observation and reporting skills, vehicle operations, personal safety, and department procedures.
The program welcomes retirees, working professionals, college students, and anyone interested in serving their community or learning more about public safety.
