RVs, Boats & Trailers: What You Need to Know
Whether you're hitting the road or setting sail, knowing where to park your RV, boat, or trailer is key—here’s a quick guide to staying compliant with city regulations.
Parking:
- Streets - Residents are allowed to park a recreational vehicle on a residential street for up to 72 hours consecutively per month, but only for the purpose of loading or unloading. This means that while you can temporarily park your RV to prepare for a trip or unpack after returning, it cannot be stored or left parked long-term on the street. - Municipal Code 10-10-33 (B)
- Driveways - Similar restrictions apply to driveways. While you can temporarily park your RV in your driveway to prepare for a trip or unpack, it cannot be stored there long-term (longer than 48 hours). You cannot store it at all in your driveway If it violates city regulations, such as obstructing sidewalks or extending into the public right-of-way. – 2024 Zoning Code Update 11-3.1 (I)(2) Outdoor Storage
Habitation:
- Definition: "Habitation" means regularly and exclusively using a space, like an RV, as a private residence separate from another home on the same property. This includes not only sleeping but also cooking, bathing, working, long-term storage, and hosting guests. - 2024 Zoning Code Update 11-8.1 Definitions
- Long Term Occupancy - You cannot live in a travel trailer or mobile home on residential or commercial property unless it is in a designated mobile home park with a city permit. - Municipal Code 10-10-33 (A)
- Temporary Permits for Construction – If you are building a home, you may apply for a Temporary Use Permit to live in a mobile home on the property during construction. This permit is only granted if the construction is expected to take longer than six months, and no additional extensions are allowed. Municipal Code 5-5-2
Storage:
- Long-Term Storage Definition: Long-term storage is defined as keeping a vehicle, RV, boat, or trailer in the same location for 48 hours or more. - 2024 Zoning Code Update 11-3.1(I)(2) Outdoor Storage
- No Parking on Unpaved Areas – RVs, boats, and trailers cannot be parked on lawns, dirt, or any other unpaved surfaces visible from the street. - 2024 Zoning Code Update 11-3.1 (I)(2) Outdoor Storage
- Screening Requirement – RVs, boats, and trailers stored outdoors must be screened from view from public streets, freeways, residential areas, and open spaces. Screening must be a wall or fence that matches the main structure and follows height and setback rules. - 2024 Zoning Code Update 11-3.1 (I)(2) Outdoor Storage
- Fence & Wall Rules – No barbed wire or razor wire is allowed in residential areas. Screening walls or fences must not be taller than 15 feet. Other accessory structures used to store vehicles may not exceed 16 feet. Stored vehicles must not exceed the height of the screening. - - 2024 Zoning Code Update 11-3.1 (I)(2) Outdoor Storage, 11-2.2(D).
