SPARCS 5K Color Run Brings Bright Start to Selma Morning
A foggy Saturday morning set the scene for a burst of color in Downtown Selma as the SPARCS 5K Color Run returned for its second year. Runners gathered under the large SPARCS banner, where the countdown led to an explosion of bright powder that drifted through the fog. Families, children, and even a few dogs took off down the route, marking the start of a lively community event that blended fitness with fun.
Participation grew again this year, with 173 runners and walkers joining the course and 14 volunteers helping manage the event. Attendees traveled from throughout the region, including Visalia, Tulare, Tipton, Reedley, Oxnard, Madera, Lemoore, Kingsburg, Hanford, and Fresno. The run also received support from local and regional partners such as Adventist Health, Selma Arts Center, Mid-Valley Disposal, Valley Fitness, Maiden Voyage, Starbucks, Crown Services Company, UPS, and Antonio’s Mexican Restaurant.
Participants praised the event’s upbeat atmosphere and inclusive approach. Families moved together at their own pace, experienced runners mixed with first-timers, and children enthusiastically added color along the route. Many said they appreciated that the run was accessible to people of all ages and fitness levels and that the focus was on enjoying the morning rather than racing the clock.
SPARCS Staff intentionally designed the 5K as a non-competitive color run to make it more welcoming, especially since Selma had never hosted a community run before. With Downtown Selma leaning into an arts-focused identity, the color-themed event felt like a natural fit. The format also encouraged participation from those who may be hesitant about timed races. According to SPARCS Staff, the goal was simple: create a fun, family-friendly event that brings people together. With growing attendance and strong community support, the SPARCS 5K Color Run is quickly becoming a standout tradition in Selma’s annual calendar.
