The Selma Police Department is inviting community members to make a difference by joining its relaunched Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS) Program. Originally established in 1996, the program gives volunteers the opportunity to support public safety, assist at community events, and work alongside police personnel in a non-enforcement role.

VIPS volunteers serve as extra eyes and ears in the community while helping with traffic and pedestrian safety, community outreach, and special events. By taking on these important support roles, volunteers allow sworn officers to remain focused on emergency response and law enforcement. Volunteers do not carry weapons, make arrests, or perform enforcement duties.

The program is open to adults from all backgrounds, including retirees, working professionals, college students, and those interested in pursuing a career in public safety. Applicants must be at least 21 years old, possess a valid California driver's license, pass a background investigation, and commit to volunteering at least 16 hours each month. Selected participants will receive department training before beginning their assignments.

"Whether you're looking to give back, stay active after retirement, or explore a future career in public safety, the VIPS Program offers an opportunity to make a real difference in Selma," said Sergeant Andrew Guzman.
